The Supreme Court of India, based on a petition by Navtej Suri and others, and combining other similar petitions, recently passed judgement to read down the Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code and to “decriminalise homosexual acts.”
This verdict borrows from and quotes the landmark NALSA Vs Union of India judgement of 2014 which granted trans persons the right to self determine their gender.

The Transgender Persons [Protection of Rights] Bill 2016, referred to as the TG Bill 2016, was tabled in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Parliament of India, in August 2016. The bill, as drafted by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, has been criticised by the members of the Transgender, Gender-Variant, and Intersex communities.
